Toric Contact Lenses
Toric contact lenses are made of the same materials as other types of contact lenses, but they are specifically designed for people suffering from astigmatism, myopia or hyperopia . For anyone with a relatively small amount of astigmatism, between zero and 1.00 diopter (either +1.00 or -1.00), you may be able to wear a regular spherical RGP or even a spherical soft lens and for anyone with more than that toric lenses are the only viable choice besides eye glasses. Usually contacts are spherical in shape, while toric lenses have different angles designed to correct astigmatism and a mechanism to keep the contact lens relatively stable on the eye when you blink or look around. They don't move when your eyes move, and this may take some getting used to, but they are very effective. The process of finding the best lens can be tedious, since there are varying degrees of astigmatism and each person's cornea measures up differently. Once you could only get rigid contacts that effectively corrected the condition, but today there is a whole array of features and lens types available, including disposable, frequent replacement, multifocal, or colored varieties.
