  Atropine Eye Drops

This is quite similar to patching. In this treatment, a drop of atropine is placed in the strong eye to blur its vision. This forces the brain to make use of the lazy eye. It is a highly effective form of treatment as parents do not need to keep constant vigil on children to see that the patch is intact. Atropine is also administered as ointment. Recent researches have shown that atropine is far more effective than patching.

The drug is not without side effects. Inability to change focus due to the paralysis of the ciliary muscle of the eye, slower heart rate, watery eyes and light sensitivity are the important side effects. Most of the side effects are the result of long term use.
